Raglan Castle
reconstruction
Raglan Castle was one of the last
magnificent medieval castles built. It achieved palatial
status up until it was besieged in 1646 in the civil war and was
left unusable as a castle fortification.
Raglan was surrounded by beautiful
gardens including a manmade lake and rare water garden. The
household numbered close to 150 servants including footmen,
grooms, chefs, clerks and menial servants. Great attention was
given to dining arrangements with the head clerk gathering at
the great hall with the rest of the servants at meal times.
The earl of Worcester would dine with his guests in the privacy
of their own dining room.
The model depicted here is a
reconstruction of Raglan in its heyday just before the civil
war. Notable features of reconstruction include the
Fountain court, double-hammer beam roof in the Great Hall, the
long Gallery, library above the gatehouse, office wings, state
apartments and, of course, dungeons!
